Angus Council – Get Active Arbroath Initiative

 

Angus Council is calling on people in Arbroath to blow away the winter cobwebs and get active with the launch of a new campaign promoting healthier, more environmentally friendly lives.

Both residents and workers in the Angus coastal town are invited to sign up to a six-week campaign – Get Active Arbroath – which starts on Monday 1 February.

Through the campaign, people will be encouraged to walk, cycle or run more than they do now. Participants will be able to earn rewards and enter a prize draw with some fantastic prizes up for grabs. For example, Angus Cycle Hub has donated four refurbished bikes for use as prizes.

Angus Cycle Hub Project Director, Scott Francis said: “We are thrilled to be supporting the ‘Get Active Arbroath’ campaign. As a local organisation that supports walking and cycling, we are excited to be part of a scheme that promotes active travel and also benefits the local community. What’s not to like about being rewarded to get fit and stay active!”

We want everyone to stick to the guidelines and restrictions currently in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but outdoor exercise is not limited and it is important for people’s physical and mental health to get outdoors for fresh air and to exercise as much as possible.

Taking part in the challenge is easy. Simply download the BetterPoints app from the App Store or Google Play store.  Register your details and the app will automatically add you to the ‘Get Active Arbroath’ challenge. You can then use the BetterPoints app to track your active journeys. This will allow you to earn rewards from Monday 1 February.

The BetterPoints app has helped thousands of people across the UK and Europe to adopt greener and healthier habits.

Angus Council’s Communities Convener, Cllr Mark Salmond said: “For most people, getting more active by walking, cycling or running can be a safe, practical and really enjoyable way to look after their physical and mental wellbeing.

“Many people use these types of activities and exercise to help beat the winter blues or to get back in shape after a little festive over-indulgence. The global COVID-19 pandemic and the significant restrictions it has placed on us all make it even more important that we all look after our physical and mental health.

“Current Scottish Government Coronavirus regulations permit you to walk, cycle and run for exercise or essential travel, provided you follow social distancing, travel and other government guidelines. In most cases, up to two people from two separate households can meet outdoors for these purposes. There is currently, no limit on how many times people can go out to exercise.

“I urge everyone who lives, works or studies in Arbroath to consider getting involved in the ‘Get Active Arbroath’ campaign and experience the benefits that being more physically active can deliver.”
